Understanding Poker Odds
So, you have heard of poker
odds, you have even seen them, but do you really understand what they
mean? When you see 2:1, 7:1, 9:1, what do these numbers mean to you and
how can they help you in the game of poker. Well, these are your odds.
These numbers tell you how much you stand to win or lose essentially.
In other words, if you see the numbers
2:1 in any poker
game, this tells you a few things. First, it tells you that if you
win, the house will owe you two, if you lose, you owe the house two. Now
you are probably asking two or one what? Well, money. Not two dollars or
one dollar. Instead, this signifies that if you win, the house will pay
you two times your bet, if you lose, you will pay the house your original
bet.
Simple enough isn't it? So in other
words, if on a poker hand you are betting $10, if you lose, you pay the
house that $10. If you win, the house will pay you $20, in additional to
your original bet. Therefore, if you win, you have just made $30, which
is your original $10, plus the $20 you have won from the house.
Poker odds are easy enough to understand
once you get the basics down. So the first number in the odds is what the
house will pay you, the second is what you will pay the house. So, if the
odds are 6:1, the house pays you six times the amount you bet, if you are
the winner. If you are the loser, you will pay the house your original
bet. If you pay $20 and you win, you will win $120, plus your original
bet, so essentially $130. If you lose, you will simply lose your original
bet.
Understanding poker odds is an essential
element to playing poker. Knowing what you stand to win or lose can help
you in choosing the right game for you to play, rather in an online casino
or offline, land based casino. At any rate, now that you know about poker
odds, you are walking into any casino with important knowledge and can
take comfort in knowing that you are one step closer to mastering the game
of poker.
