History of Tennis:
1 The first championships at Wimbledon,
in London were played in 1877.
2 The U.S. Open was first held in
1881.
3 The U.S. National Women’s Singles
Championships were first held in 1887.
4 The French Open was first held
in 1891 in France.
5 In 1912, the International Lawn
Tennis Federation was created in Paris.
6 In August 1900 the first Davis
Cup match was held between Britain and the United States at the Longwood
Cricket Club, Boston.
7 Wimbledon, U.S. Open, Australian
Open, and French Open are the most prestigious events in tennis. Together
these four events are called the Grand Slam.
8 In 1884 a women’s singles events
was played at Wimbledon for the first time, and 13 women competed. Two
sisters played for the finals trophy, Maud Watson and her sister Lilian,
which Maud won. The doubles championship started in 1899.
