£100 Prize In Kerbside Recycling Competition
Mr. Dennis Templeman, 58, of Ross Court
Estate, has won £100 in a household recycling competition. His ticket
was drawn from hundreds of other recycling boxes and bags from Herefordshire.
“I just couldn’t believe it when I was told that I had won. Out of all
the boxes and bags to choose from and mine was picked – how lucky was that.”
He added: “I think it’s a great idea to offer this prize
because not only does it encourage greater participation but it also raises
awareness of recycling.”
The competition is a part of the
Target 75 campaign, an initiative between Herefordshire Council and Worcestershire
County Council in partnership with Waste and Resources Action Programme.
The recycling competition aimed to increase kerbside recycling and minimise
waste going to landfill. The initiators of this programme point at a 75%
recycling of kerbside material by March 2006.
An assistant at the Target 75 project,
Ms.Victoria Salisbury, underlines the fact that this contest gives the
winner something no one expects: 100 pounds just for taking out the garbage.
She agreed that this event offers competitors
an insight into the world of recycling: “It isn’t often you get offered
the chance of £100 just for taking out the rubbish. “We hope more
residents will try their luck at the competition. “We hope the competition
also raises awareness and use of the kerbside recycling scheme.”
Herefordshire and Worcestershire’s
residents can take part only if they are covered by a kerbside recycling
collection scheme. They must fill in ticket and place it in the provided
recycling boxes or bags.
The Target 75 campaign used communications
techniques such as media campaign, a doorstepping campaign, and a recycling
exhibition vehicle. Two newsletters were sent to households in Herefordshire
and Worcestershire to inform residents about the campaign and encouraged
them to participate in their kerbside recycling schemes. Incentives to
recycle were included in the newsletters by way of competitions and prize draws.
